A little bit about Maverick: Maverick is a very smart and friendly boy. He loves meeting other dogs and people. He does jump up on people in his excitement but then rolls over for his tummy to be rubbed. His behaviour is very puppyish. He will stop suddenly while out for walks and will watch the world go by for ages. He sometimes needs encouraged to move on e.g. a treat or, if there are 2 of you, a game of hide and seek works wonders and he will rush off to look for you. He loves to chase a ball in the secure field and will bring it back to you. He is also happy climbing on the wooden frames in the agility field and jumping over the hurdles and even going through the tunnel. He would probably enjoy doing more of this.
Maverick will move away from you if he thinks that you are about to put on his harness and lead but once you are beside him, he will stand quietly and let you put them on him.
His favourite way to pass the time is to pick up anything and everything that he can reach. He likes food, paper, socks, t.v. remote etc and is skilled in the art of counter surfing. He is also adept at opening doors both inwards and outwards. The use of a baby gate at the foot of the stairs stops him getting up to any mischief upstairs.
He is very focussed on food/treats and will sit and lie down. He will also ‘leave it’ although this is a work in progress as is ‘drop it’.
More about Maverick: Maverick is fully housetrained and is used to the crate. This is used by his foster family at their mealtimes and for Maverick to sleep in overnight and also whenever his foster family must leave him alone for a time. He is happy to follow a treat into the crate and settles well there.
He tends to bark/yip for attention so keeping him occupied is key. He would be happy in a lively household where he can be kept occupied mentally as well as physically. He is strong on the lead and does pull. He isn’t walked off lead while in foster, but he shows great interest in wanting to chase cats, squirrels and birds.
Maverick enjoys travelling in the car and will either sit or lie on the back seat or in the footwell of the car secured by a seatbelt attachment.
Maverick will make a great pet in the right home, he has a huge personality!
Visiting the vet: There were no issues when Maverick had his recent health check with a local vet, and he behaved well there. The staff all loved him.
Behavioural issues: Maverick is a prolific thief, special care must be taken with socks!
Home needs: Another youngish dog for company and as a playmate would be fine. Older children only as one of his puppy traits is to 'mouth' and jump around when excited. He is young and strong and still very puppylike so an active, experienced home where someone is home for most of the day and who can commit the time and patience to training this clever boy. An enclosed garden would be ideal.
Ongoing support: Springer Rescue for Scotland will be available for any support with your new dog and can offer behavioural support in case of any problems that may arise on adopting a dog.
