A little bit about Hamish: Hamish is a happy, energetic and enthusiastic dog. He loves being outside running around the garden with his nose to the ground, having a good sniff. He loves going out on walks to the woods or just around the block. He doesn't mind being out in the rain or sunshine. Hamish does sometimes take a while to chill in an evening, but he will come and sit next to you or even on top of you, he doesn't mind! He loves a cuddle, a stroke behind the ear or just a snooze on the floor.
Hamish likes nothing better to do than keep you on your toes, he will counter surf and snaffle anything within his reach, food, socks, hankies etc, etc. He is very adept at opening doors both inwards and outwards but is learning that no means no when told to stop. He is a very springy springer and need reminding that people do not like being jumped up at this is a work in progress to stop him.
More about Hamish: Hamish is fully housetrained and will let you know when it is time to go out. He has been crate trained since coming to foster care and has taken to it like a duck to water. He will happily go to bed at night and stay there with no problems. He is also crated during the day when his foster carer's have to go out for a couple of hours. He is left with some toys and a rabbit ear for a treat. This is due to the counter surfing and door opening exploits. There is no barking on leaving and no barking heard when foster carer returns. He is getting better at waiting in his crate once the door has been opened and waiting for the okay command.
Hamish is a very strong dog with a huge amount of energy. He came to us with a neck harness and spring-loaded lead which he pulled on all the time. He now walks much calmer and better on a figure of eight lead. He still can get very excited when the lead comes out but once his initial excitement is over, he walks well with constant reminders. He is walked on a long lead as he has no recall and would chase birds for ever more. He will react to his name being called when out in the garden. He is out in the garden with a long lead due to the no recall. This is a work in progress.
Hamish is a treat focused dog in the house. He will sit for treats; he will also sit and wait for his meals and not eat till given the okay command.
Hamish lives with a foster brother who is 5 months older. They rub along together most of the time with the occasional play fight that can get a bit rough.
Hamish is excited to meet other dogs outside but needs reminding to stop jumping up. We have not met any cats or other animals while out so untested, but I would say a cat is fair game in Hamish's world. Hamish has no manners when meeting people; he likes to jump up when greeting them again this is a work in progress with him, he is slowly getting better.
Hamish is a very springy springer and may frighten small children with his boisterous nature but this may improve with training.
Hamish travels well in the boot of a car, he is happy to jump in and be harnessed in. He lies down while the car is moving with no stress at all.
Hamish is a lovable dog and will make a great pet in the right environment with the right training. He needs a strong owner who will continue his training and give him lots of stimulation
Visiting the vet: Hamish has had his routine health check which all SRS dogs get. He is fit and well with no current issues.
Behavioural issues: No major issues. Just the usual Springer counter surfing and sock stealing.
Home needs: Hamish is a strong youngster in need of continued training so will need an experienced active home with the time and patience to work on his training and manners. He would like someone around most of the time, and a secure garden for playing and training in. He loves his walks so access to interesting places would be ideal. Older children only, as he is quite boisterous. Another youngish dog to play with would be fine. Probably best with no cats.
Ongoing support: Springer Rescue for Scotland will be available for any support with your new dog and can offer behavioural support in case of any problems that may arise on adopting a dog.
