A little bit about Duchess – she is a typical inquisitive, bouncy Springer pup. She has come on a lot while in foster, learning lots of new things and coping well with new experiences. She is gaining confidence all the time, but still needs some socialisation especially when meeting new people, and her training should be continued. She is generally fine with other dogs and is currently living with two other Springers.
Energy Requirements: Duchess needs exercise appropriate to her age, and this can be increased gradually over the next few months. She loves her walks, she might pick up sticks and try to chew them, so she now carries her ball and is less interested in sticks.
Training: Training is going very well. Her recall is good (unless distracted by birds), she does pull on the lead but a figure of 8 helps. She was a counter surfer when she first arrived in foster, but this is much improved. She has several commands, including ‘leave it’ which she is very familiar with!
Visiting the vet: She is fine at the vet, as long as the vet has treats! She has had her routine health check and all went well. Her vaccinations are being brought up to date. She has not had her first season yet.
Travelling: She needs to become a more confident traveller. She drools a bit in the car, and it’s best not to feed her directly before going on a journey.
Food: She loves her food, and is quite food orientated, so this will make training her a little easier. She does guard her food from the other dogs but will happily allow her fosterer to remove the food.
Sleep: she sleeps in her own bed in a crate in the kitchen. She sleeps all night, with no issues.
Behavioural issues: She does guard her food bowl from the other dogs. To discourage guarding behaviour she is not allowed toys in the house. Otherwise, she gets on fine with the resident dogs and with visiting dogs.
Home needs: Duchess will need an active, experienced home where her new owners can continue her socialisation and training. She is at the tricky Springer teenager stage and needs someone who will be consistent with her. She would be fine with another dog for confidence, and she may be fine with cats if introduced carefully. She will be fine with older children, she is just quite boisterous at times. She will need a garden and interesting walking opportunities.
Ongoing support: Springer Rescue for Scotland will be available for any support with your new dog and can offer behavioural support in case of any problems that may arise on adopting a dog
