Personality & Temperament: Percy is a happy chap. He is playful and affectionate. He likes to borrow things e.g. a sock. He will hold it in his mouth and parade in front of you, wagging his tail. He does give it up when asked. Floyd doesn’t ‘borrow’ things, but he does greet you with a toy and is reluctant to give it up except when offered a treat. Percy is sensitive to sudden or loud noises and is a little wary of the vacuum but no real issue there. He can be quite excitable e.g. when he knows that he is going for a walk he barks and then Floyd barks. It is quieter to get them ready in separate rooms.. Both Percy and Floyd are strong so hold on tight. When there are no other dogs or birds to distract them or cats to chase, they walk nicely alongside each other. They each wear a harness and lead. They would benefit with training and socialising with other dogs.
Floyd is the calmer of the two dogs more independent and confident, loving and gentle. He can be a little aloof, but he can also be very affectionate and when excited and happy he has a funny wobble of his head and a very wiggly body. He does not like to have his front paws touched especially his right front paw due to having surgery after his paw got infected when a grass seed stuck in it, plus he stood on broken glass once. He has a sensitive stomach if he eats something he shouldn’t. Both dogs love to have their tummies rubbed and like to lie in the garden in the sunshine. They love food and treats but have no patience and will snatch them from you so be mindful of this.
Home Life: Both Percy and Floyd are housetrained and have settled in well in foster. They are quite chilled and laid back choosing to snooze much of the day when there’s nothing much happening. They like the comfort of the sofa or chair or bed and cuddling alongside you. They especially like to sleep at night in bed with you, under the duvet cover but are content to sleep in their dog beds when placed outside the bedroom (behind a baby gate) and with the bedroom door open as Percy becomes anxious if he can ‘t see you and will whine and then bark. Both dogs settle fine in the house on their own but when you are there, they need to be with you and will fuss if you close a door on them.
Getting Along with Others: Both dogs are friendly towards visitors in the home. They bark a welcome and may jump up, but they quickly settle and go and lie down. They are good with children of 5 years plus and friendly when anyone approaches them while out walking. Percy barks at most but not all dogs while out on walks and that sets off Floyd. Floyd was attacked as a puppy and can be reactive to other dogs.
Exercise: They come from an active family and were used to running and hiking and were used to a minimum of 3 x 50-minute walks per day but are very content in foster with a less active household. In a secure field both dogs had good recall and the previous family report that off lead Percy has good recall but Floyd not so much. That he responds better to the whistle. They have only basic training – sit, come, stay.
Health Issues: Both dogs are neutered. They have had their routine healthcheck in foster.
Percy may need some dental work in the future once he is settled in his new home. Both dogs now have a plaque supplement added to their water.
Both dogs are groomed every 2 months. Floyd does not like having his paws groomed. Percy does not like having his teeth brushed. Vaccinations are due August 2026.
Travel: Both dogs sleep on the back seat of the car when travelling, secured in a dog harness with seat belt attachment. They are fine on journeys of up to 2 hours.
Home Needs: Percy and Floyd would suit a family environment or a retired but active household, with someone at home much of the time. They enjoy pottering or sun-puddling in the garden when not out walking so a secure garden would be perfect. Older children would be fine. They would probably chase cats. They may be fine with another friendly dog but are used to being the only dogs in the home.
Ongoing support: Springer Rescue for Scotland will be available for any support with your new dog and can offer behavioural support in case of any problems that may arise on adopting a dog.
Please do not express interest in Percy & Floyd if you are going on holiday in the next 4-6 weeks. They will be rehomed together.
