A little bit about Naya –. Naya is a golden small to medium sized Cocker cross Patterdale. She is an absolute sweetheart - when she first came into foster she was scared of everything but over the past 5 weeks her confidence has grown and she has blossomed into a much more confident dog, settling really well into her routine in the foster home.

After a careful introduction she gets on brilliantly with the fosterer’s two dogs - a 13yo ESS and a 4yo show cocker and she has met a variety of other dogs when out and about but is a bit unsure about boisterous confident dogs. That said, she is getting better every day and is meeting dogs in a calm controlled way. She much prefers walking alongside a dog rather than meeting them face to face.

In the home, Naya is a couch potato -she loves to cuddle up next to (and sometimes on top of) her fosterers. When she is out on a walk she loves nothing more than to have a good run around and has a couple of walks a day on a long line to allow her to do this safely. She has had a number of visits to a secure dog field and she loves the freedom that gives her. It is also a great opportunity to practice her recall which is improving daily providing there are no distractions around.

She is very good with calm children although can be a bit excitable initially, so will ideally suit dog savvy children aged 5 years +.

Energy Requirements:  Naya needs regular interesting walks with lots of interesting smells and and likes to play in the garden. She loves a zoomie! Short training sessions help to distract and focus her. Her current routine is morning walk @ 7.30am; breakfast @ 8.30am; evening walk @ 5.30pm; tea @ 6.30pm; bedtime walk @ 8.30pm followed by a bedtime snack around 9.15pm.

Training:  Naya's recall is good providing there are no distractions (birds, other dogs, people) so work will need to be done with that. She walks well on a lead until there is a distraction but can't walk in a straight line on one side of you to save her life - she loves to weave all over the place. She doesn't seem overly interested in toys but is discovering the joy of a treat or two so training may prove less of a challenge although she loves praise and a fuss. She is a smart little dog who will make somebody a fabulous family pet. She has a high prey drive as when she has seen birds or cats on her walk (despite living with a cat in her previous home) she has wanted to chase them.

She does have some training and very good manners ie taking treats very gently and sitting beforehand without being asked.

Visiting the vet: Naya has had her routine healthcheck and is fit and well. Her vaccinations are up to date. Naya came into foster unneutered and has not had a season whilst in foster, she will be adopted with a contract to be spayed after her next season. Naya was a little nervous at the vets but once the vet won her round with a cuddle and a biscuit she was very good, but she wasn’t keen on having her nails clipped.

Travelling:  Naya cries for the first couple of minutes but soon settles really well in the car. She travels in the boot behind the dog guard.

Food: Naya currently gets a third of a tray of Wainwrights grain free meat. She gets a rabbit ear ay bedtime and a couple of treats on each walk.

Sleep:  Naya has a bed on the floor next to her fosterer’s bed, which she sleeps in all night. The minute the alarm goes off in the morning she jumps into the himan’s bed for cuddles, and will get down if asked. .

Behavioural issues:  Naya has some mild separation anxiety and can be nervous in unfamiliar surroundings. She cries and barks when first left but this only lasts a few minutes. She is a little unsure when first meeting new dogs, but after careful introductions she is fine (depending on the dog). She isn’t keen on big boisterous dogs that get in her face and prefers dogs that just walk alongside her and that she can sniff when she is used to them.

Home needs: Naya would do well in a home with at least one other dog, however, could also be an only dog providing someone is around most of the time. She does have mild separation anxiety so any prospective new home would have to be willing to work with her on that. A secure garden and interesting long walks would be ideal.

Ongoing support: Springer Rescue for Scotland will be available for any support with your new dog and can offer behavioural support in case of any problems that may arise on adopting a dog
