A little bit about Donald: Donald is a beautiful Sprocker. His coat is almost black, but he has dark brown through it. Very smart and responds to commands very well. He is fantastic in the house. Will wait to be asked if allowed on sofa. He is an affectionate dog and likes to sleep on top of you. He also likes his bed and will happily sleep there too. He loves his walks and is very excited to go out. He does not like other dogs. Reactive to other dogs up close. He is fine at a distance or across a road. He is a friendly loyal dog. Overall, a wonderful dog for the right family.
Energy Requirements: He is an energetic boy. He has a morning walk for about 30 mins and then a longer afternoon walk and a late evening walk. He is reasonably good on the lead, but pulls a little. Secure dog fields are great for him, and he enjoys his visits. He is happy to be left for short periods in the home.
Training: He is excellent with his training and responds well. He already had a great foundation. He will wait to be told for food and also waits before coming in house before owner. He walks really well to heel off lead when practised in a secure field. Recall is good in a secure field. He does however like to hunt and chase rabbits. With his reactivity to dogs, he is best off lead only in secure dog fields or safe areas. He is ball obsessed, but has been enjoying the agility courses at the secure dog fields instead of ball time.
Visiting the vet: He was quite nervous at the vet’s, however let the vet check him over. No aggressive behaviour at the vets, just nervous.
Travelling: At the moment he travels on the back seat of the car clipped in. He travels well, whinges a little as he is excited. Usually quiet on way home after his walk.
Food: He currently eats twice a day. He eats his food no problem. He currently eats Harrington Natural Choice.
Sleep: He sleeps downstairs in the family room. No issues or barking. He has a final evening walk at about 11 am and will sleep happily till 7am.
Behavioural issues: Donald is reactive to other dogs. When he sees another dog while on lead, he looks like he is excited to see them. He doesn’t bark or growl, but when closer he will be more aggressive. Overall, it is manageable for someone who is a confident dog owner. Awareness of surroundings and communication with other dog owners makes walks easier. He is excellent in the home. No behavioural issues at all. No aggression ever to humans.
Home needs: Donald will need an active home, with someone very experienced with the breed, and around most of the time who can continue his training and offer him interesting but quiet walking opportunities. Someone who is confident to handle him if issues arise when walking. Which involves distracting him and avoiding as must as possible. He would benefit from a secure garden for play in and for training between walks. He would be best as the only dog in the home, although he has lived with other dogs and if introduced slowly this might be an option.
Ongoing support: Springer Rescue for Scotland will be available for any support with your new dog and can offer behavioural support in case of any problems that may arise on adopting a dog.
